Contrary to the image that one may have of the job, a translator does not work alone. My research into self-translation led me to bring to the fore the multiple collaborations that a translator needs (page Works & publications). Among those, working with other translators proves particularly invaluable.
If their mother tongue is the language of the document in question, they may help to understand it by giving their own understanding of the original text, cultural explanations, etc. If the document is to be translated into their mother tongue, they are indispensable, either to translate or to revise thoroughly the translation.
But all translators do not work in the same way, far from it. Rather than joining an existing network, which is likely to be disappointing in some way or other, it is interesting then to set up one's own network of professionals with whom one may, for example, agree on the method to use for such-and-such project, or exchange information, tools, etc. Hence the importance of a relationship based on confidence and dialogue...
